OUR SAVIOUR was organized in 1920 after the 1st World War in a community with a sizeable German population in Port Huron, MI. A break off from TRINITY LUTHERAN, the member of Our Saviour wanted English, not German for the language of worship and Christian Education. And so the birth of a new congregation took place. Meeting first in a house and using the public library across the street for Sunday School, etc. The congregation grew and a building was begun in 1930 during the Great Depression. And yet, in spite of a World War and a Great Depression this congregation began and grew during hard times. In its 87 year history, Our Saviour has had 3 pastors to lead the sheep of the congregation. Like many churches after WW2, the Sunday School and church grew by leaps and bounds. The congregation had over 500 in Sunday School. So, the people built a new Sunday School wing in 1961 for doing its Educational Ministries. Unfortunately, the culture and nation has changed and church is less important. Sunday School is now down to about 15 youth. We desire more! We have had a van to drive youth in, teachers to lead classes, we have called youth, send postcard reminders, and talked it up. We have offered WONDERFUL WEDNESDAYS now for 14 years and beginning year 15 this fall. We offer junior choir at 5 pm. Congregational hot supper meal at 5:45 pm, and senior choir, adult Bible study, and youth classes and activities from 6:45- 8 pm for 37 weeks a year. We are better able to reach more youth with this format than Sunday School. Pastor Don has cooked over 29,000 meals for these Wednesdays over the 14 years, the current meal charge is $1.50/youth and $3.00 for adults. This fall, after 3 years, we will increase it to $2. and $3.50. Not bad for all you can eat: salads, 2 hot entrees, vegs, dessert and drinks.
We are much more than a beautiful building or a kind hand shake or warm friendship. We believe that God abides among us. We believe that God is using us within our community doing ministry through us. We do not think we alone are the only church. Rather, we do believe that with sisters and brothers within other congregations and faith communities, we compose TOGETHER the Body of Jesus Christ, God's Church. Perhaps, you feel and believe as we do! Listen to us weekly on radio, WHLS, local 1450 AM, 11 am. We have broadcasted LIVE our worship for over 68 years! Yes, back in 1939, decisions were made and phone patch installed to enable us to broadcast live from our sanctuary through the radio station.
